What is an Otaku?
In Japanese, an Otaku is someone who invests a significant amount of time and energy into their hobby. The term can roughly be compared to “nerd” or “geek” and is occasionally used in a derogatory manner. Although “Otaku” generally describes fans, the term is nowadays, especially in the West, associated with the anime and manga subculture.
Origin of the word explained
The exact meaning of the term “Otaku” is disputed. The word consists of the Japanese honorific prefix “O” and “Taku,” which roughly means “house.” This can also refer to one’s own home. For this reason, “Otaku” is often associated with people who love their hobby so much that they stay at home exclusively to engage with it.
Another possible definition is based on a different translation. Otaku can also be used as a polite address for a stranger. The writer Akio Nakamori used the term in 1983 in an article to describe fans who were deeply involved in the then nascent manga fan culture.
For a long time, “Otaku” was a negatively connoted external designation. However, the term has now gained more acceptance in society and is increasingly used positively. Many anime and manga fans also describe themselves as Otakus to symbolize their group membership.
