In the summer of 2019, the fantasy series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance premiered on Netflix. However, the story has not yet been completed – when will Season 2 follow?
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a prequel series to the 1982 fantasy film The Dark Crystal, created by Muppet-maker Jim Henson. The show tells the story of three Gelflings who discover the dark secret behind the evil forces of the Skeksis. Once they uncover the truth, they do everything they can to start a rebellion and save their planet.
The series was released on Netflix in the summer of 2019. The first season consists of ten episodes and was praised by critics. Despite the positive reception, Netflix has not renewed the series for a second season. Why that is and what the future holds for The Dark Crystal season 2 is explained below.
The Dark Crystal: No Second Season in Sight
Unfortunately, we have to inform you that The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will not be getting a second season. Netflix officially announced in 2020 that there would be no continuation. In a statement, they said: “We are grateful to the Jim Henson Company for bringing The Dark Crystal to life for fans around the world. A special thanks goes to producers Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford, director Louis Leterrier, as well as the writers, cast, and crew for their excellent work.”
The show’s early cancellation was particularly surprising as it had just won an Emmy Award in the category “Outstanding Children’s Program.” Additionally, the creators had already developed ideas for a second season. The fact that the story remains unfinished is evident in the season one finale.
We know how the story ultimately ends thanks to the 1982 film The Dark Crystal. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can rent or buy it on Amazon Prime Video. Spoiler alert: In the original film, the Gelfling Jen, along with Kira, embarks on a long journey and, with the help of the Dark Crystal, ends the Skeksis’ reign of terror, restoring their world to a paradise-like state.
