Inspired by the popular video game series, Netflix launched a live-action Resident Evil series in 2022. But is season 2 already in the works?
Resident Evil is primarily known for its video games. The first title was released in Japan in 1996 for the PlayStation. What many people may not know is that the survival horror series has been adapted into various films, both animated and live-action. The live-action series premiered on Netflix in the summer of 2022.
What Is Resident Evil About?
In 2022, sisters Jade and Billie Wesker, the teenage daughters of Umbrella scientist Albert Wesker, move to New Raccoon City. They must adjust to their new school and life. Soon, they begin to suspect that their father is hiding dark secrets that could pose a significant threat to the world.
Fast forward to 2036, when a zombie apocalypse has decimated the majority of humanity and turned them into the undead. Jade, now an adult, is on a mission to gather information about the zombies, uncover the secrets of the past, and find her sister.
Is Netflix Planning a Second Season of Resident Evil?
The first season left viewers with a cliffhanger and many unanswered questions. Spoiler alert: For instance, who is truly behind Albert Wesker, or rather his clone Bert, and what happened to the original Umbrella CEO Evelyn? Unfortunately, it seems we won’t get answers to these questions.
Netflix has officially canceled the series. The reason the streaming service will not be producing a second season of Resident Evil is due to viewer numbers. Interest in the zombie series quickly dwindled after three weeks in the top 10. Just six weeks after its launch, Netflix announced the show’s provisional end.
Given the production costs, Resident Evil does not appear to have been a success for the streaming giant. As a result, a second season is highly unlikely. If you’d like to experience the dark zombie adventures from a different perspective, you can check out the film series, which is available at a bargain price on Amazon.
