Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a new trend started to show up across social media as people began to find new ways to connect. The trend, which popped up in 2021, was the beginning of the Wordle obsession. Since then, the NYT-owned game has transformed the landscape for puzzle and word games alike.One of the new games to follow in this trend is a grid-based movie guessing game named Movie Mesh, which challenges players to solve movie-themed puzzles within a movie grid structure.
Wordle was first released publicly in October 2021 and by the end of November, it had over 300,000 players. By January 2022, the software engineer who made the game had sold it to the New York Times for a ‘seven-figure’ sum and the NYT has continued to maintain it in the years since. While its popularity has waned in recent years, the game continues to be one of the top stars in the NYT game catalog alongside their Crossword, Spelling Bee, and several others.
What is Movie Mesh?
Inspired by Wordle’s creation and its subsequent success, Movie Mesh challenges cinephiles to put their knowledge of movies to the test to fit different categories. It asks solvers to find nine movies in total with the help of given clues on either side of the three-by-three grid. The player gets nine turns to guess the name of a movie that fits within the parameters indicated by the clue.
For example, one of the clues for a Movie Mesh puzzle was Dystopian Futures and Family Film which only leads to a handful of options. That is, however, one of the easier clues in the movie grid as things do become tougher especially when given the fact that players get only nine turns to solve all nine grids.
It does mean making a mistake is out of the question as it forces the player to end the game without having solved all nine grids.
How to play Movie Mesh?
The X-axis of the movie grid has three clues that follow the axis and the Y-axis has the same as well, and the challenge is to pick a film that satisfies the intersecting clues from the x-axis and y-axis. For example, in the image below, the bottom right clue is Robots and Family Films, which I, Robot fits. The center of the grid is Dystopian Future and 2010s, which Hunger Games fits, and so on.
Furthermore, like most word games, there is a point system and a daily challenge where the puzzle resets at midnight. Not only that, Movie Mesh also has a share button that allows challengers to showcase their best scores to their friends and family and challenge them to better it.
How did Wordle pave the road for different iterations?
The craze behind Wordle changed the word and puzzle gaming industry forever as creators began to realize that players were interested in something simple but complicated at the same time. That began a new trend that gave rise to a catalog of spin-offs, alternatives, and other brain teaser games popping up over the last few years. Some adaptations include Quordle, Heardle, Framed, Semantle, and various fandom-related versions.
However, some creators took things a step ahead and have applied their own creative vision to word games in general coming up with hits like Strands, Connections, and more. Not only that, some have focused more on themes with puzzle games created for various sports and pop culture-related themes. That includes Framed, Dordle, Bikle, Nerdle, and Squirdle amongst others.
