Even though the second season and the latest spin-off were impressive, it’s been a while since we heard anything about Kingdom. Will Netflix continue the zombie series with Season 3?
Kingdom is no ordinary zombie series. The Korean drama is set in the 16th century and incorporates political intrigue into the plot, making the zombies almost secondary. That’s precisely why fans love the series on Netflix. However, it’s been quiet around Kingdom for some time now. Is a third season even in the cards?
End of Kingdom Season 2 suggests Sequel
In the season finale, Netflix hinted that the series will carry on: After the undead gained access to the palace, the queen fell victim to them. She had already given birth to her child, and Crown Prince Chang could have killed it to secure his claim to the throne. Instead, he chose to transfer power to the boy.
Seven years later, the plague seems to have been eradicated. Yet, the story is not over at this point: The new seven-year-old king, who was bitten shortly after birth and healed, seems to still carry a parasite within him. Additionally, Crown Prince Chang and Seo-bi encounter a mysterious woman in the north of the country, who had cultivated the parasitic herb.
This woman is the young warrior Ashin, who also appears in the spin-off Ashin of the North, set before the main series. The season finale suggests that the creators have further plans for her. Moreover, it’s unclear what role the parasite in the young king’s body will play. Kingdom Season 3 could provide answers to these questions.
When can we expect Kingdom Season 3?
But where is Kingdom Season 3? No one knows for sure at the moment. Apparently, Netflix had planned an extension after the second season, but since the film prequel Ashin of the North, released on the streaming platform in 2021, we haven’t heard anything more about the Korean zombie series.
It’s almost as if Netflix quietly pulled the plug on the drama. At least, that’s what the website What’s on Netflix speculates, which keeps Netflix subscribers informed about news regarding the streaming service and its productions. The portal speculates that, in direct comparison to other South Korean productions, Kingdom simply wasn’t successful enough.
Since Netflix usually doesn’t release viewer numbers, this assumption cannot be confirmed. Nevertheless, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up too much. The last update regarding Kingdom Season 3 came from the author Kim Eun-hee in 2020 in an interview with Soompi, more than three years ago.
