The original anime Great Pretender has been available on Netflix with two seasons since the summer of 2020. But what about Season 3? When will the show continue?
In recent years, Netflix has increasingly invested in anime productions, even announcing collaborations with well-known Japanese animation studios to create new series. One of these projects was the original anime Great Pretender, which received two seasons in the summer of 2020. But what’s the status of season 3?
Great Pretender: What’s the Story About?
Makoto Edamura is supposedly Japan’s greatest con artist. After he and his partner Kudo scam an elderly woman, they attempt to score a bonus by tricking a seemingly harmless Frenchman. Everything seems to go smoothly until, to Makoto’s surprise, he’s the one who ends up losing all his money.
Things quickly escalate when the police start closing in, forcing him to follow the Frenchman, Laurent Thierry, all the way to Los Angeles in a desperate attempt to recover his money. But once there, he gets drawn into one of Laurent’s bigger schemes: a drug deal that makes all of Makoto’s previous scams look insignificant.

Great Pretender: Will There Be a Third Season?
With a rating of 7.9 stars on IMDb, Great Pretender is one of Netflix’s most popular original anime series. So it’s no surprise that a continuation is in the works. However, it won’t be a typical third season. Instead, a new anime will act as a continuation.
The new title is “Great Pretender: Razbliuto”, and it will once again be produced by Studio Wit. This was revealed on the official X (Twitter) account of the anime series, along with a tentative release window in 2024. Additionally, it was announced that the global release (outside of Asia) will take place on Crunchyroll.
This means that Great Pretender will not return to Netflix. A surprising development, considering the first two seasons are exclusively available on Netflix. Fans eager for the continuation will need to switch to Crunchyroll for the new anime, which is essentially the third season.
