Rom-coms are one of the most popular genres, and with good reason. They highlight the romantic dates, grand gestures of love, and all the best parts of romance.
But, are those expectations real? We think not. Here’s everything we see in romantic comedies that, unfortunately, get it totally wrong.
1. Chasing After Someone Uninterested
Rom-coms will tell us that persistence is the key to a romantic true love. But, in reality, real dating needs to respect boundaries. If someone isn’t reciprocating interest, pushing harder won’t change that.
Here’s what we recommend. Send that final message or text, and air out your feelings. If there’s a response, that’s great. If not, oh well. In real life, recognizing the time to move on is your key to health in casual dating.
2. Letting the Green Flags Hide the Red Ones
No one’s perfect, but rom-coms take that to another level. The guy or girl will have 100 red flags, but all the protagonist sees is their 1 green flag. It’s frustrating for the viewer, but hey, at least it makes for some good drama.
In real life, there’s no such thing as “good” drama. Red flags are signals of something deeper going on. Instances of disrespect, dishonesty, and poor communication shouldn’t be overlooked just because someone’s nice or funny.
3. True Love is All You Need
There’s always that female main character with a great career and genuine friends. But what are they missing? Man, it’s always true love. But, guess what? True love isn’t the solution to everything. Real men and women can explore relationships that aren’t all-or-nothing. Singles can explore casual flirting, hook ups near me, situationships, and more as ways to fulfill their relationship needs.
4. Stalking Is Not Love
When was showing up uninvited a sign of romance? In real life, never. Romantic comedies tend to make obsessive behavior look sweet. But stalking is invasive and unhealthy, and of course, illegal. Real-life relationships are built on consent and open communication, not controlling behaviors disguised as romance.
4. Love is Always Enough
Rom-coms suggest that love alone can fix everything. In real life, that’s a half-truth. Yes, love is important, but so are factors like compatibility, communication, and effort from each side. Successful relationships require real work beyond the feelings.
5. Cheating in the Name of Chemistry
The best friend who proposes at the main character’s wedding, now that’s a classic rom-com move. But, these “meant to be” relationships aren’t glamorous. Cheating is and will always be selfish. Even in casual dating, honesty and timing matter. It’s okay to reevaluate your current situation, but at the very least, practice open communication.
6. Grand Gestures Over Decency
Movies love grand romantic gestures. But, does that make up for being a douche 95% of the movie? In reality, small acts of kindness will always matter more. Being reliable, respectful, and attentive builds stronger connections than a one-time display of love. Decency isn’t just reserved for real couples, casual daters also deserve to be treated with kindness and respect.
7. Opposites Don’t Attract
Straight and gay real-life romances are different than what we see on film. Romantic comedies often celebrate opposites falling in love. But that’s an expectation and not a reality. Even for casual dating, there needs to be an alignment on communication style as well as boundaries.
A Breakdown of Movie Tropes Vs. Real-Life Expectations
With the rom-com revival in the 2010s and beyond, it’s interesting that we still see the same tropes from decades ago. Here are some of our favorite movie tropes and how they compare to real-life expectations.
- The perfect kiss: In real life, that magical kiss in the rain is more like bumping noses, garlic breath, and where to put your hands.
- The breakup monologue: The main character’s dramatic monologue is more like an awkward text that ends up getting left on read.
- You meet your soulmate: It’s always so easy to find a soulmate in a movie. In real life, flirting, cuddling, and hook up near me’s will happen before you find that soulmate.
- The transformation makeover: The glow up with the flowing hair and glasses off? If someone only notices you after an outfit change, that’s a real-life red flag.
- The airport chase: Running through the airport to say “I love you.”? In real life, he’s going to get tackled by security, and you’re gonna miss your flight.
A Romantic Comedy is One Thing, Your Life is Another
Yes, rom-coms do get things wrong about casual dating and love. But that’s the beauty of it. Unlike in a romantic comedy, love isn’t a straight line. There’s room to explore, make mistakes, and eventually find someone that you can truly vibe with.
Whether it’s love or fun, your adventure is out there waiting for you.
