In 1899, the creators of Dark launched their next mystery series on Netflix, captivating numerous viewers. What’s the status of Season 2?
Following Dark’s tremendous success, the series creators unveiled their next mystery project on Netflix in September 2022. 1899 follows a group of European immigrants embarking from London to New York aboard the ship Kerberos in pursuit of a better life in the United States. However, their journey takes a nightmarish turn when they encounter the adrift Prometheus, the sister ship missing for months, in the middle of the Atlantic.
When can we expect 1899 Season 2?
The first season of 1899 consists of only eight episodes. Even the cliffhanger ending suggests that a 2nd season was intended by the creators. However, they hadn’t anticipated Netflix’s decision: Shortly after the debut of the first season, the streaming giant pulled the plug.
The official confirmation came from director Baran bo Odar himself. He shared on Instagram: “With a heavy heart, we must inform you that there will be no continuation of 1899. We would have liked to conclude this incredible journey with second and third seasons, as we did with ‘Dark.’ But sometimes, things don’t unfold as planned. That’s life.”
According to Netflix, 1899 managed to attract many international viewers, but the numbers didn’t justify the production costs. Consequently, it seems the fate of the German original production is sealed. So far, no petitions have persuaded the streaming service otherwise.
